Balcony railings - it's good to know before choosing

Balcony railings have two functions: safety and aesthetics. When choosing a balcony fence, it is wise to consider several things. Check which ones.

Balcony railings have two main functions: safety and aesthetics . When choosing the material, shape and other features, it is wise to consider the factors that we will look at below.

The height of the balcony railing

The regulations stipulate that the fence on the balcony must be at least 100 centimeters high. In the case of new construction, the architect will already take this into account, but even in the case of renovations of existing buildings, it is not recommended to install lower railings, as this exposes you to liability in the event of a person falling from the balcony. If you have family visiting with curious children, this can happen sooner than you think.

Open or closed fence?

We speak of an open fence when the view through it is as unobstructed as possible. A closed fence, on the contrary, means that a view through it is not possible. At the same time, of course, there are not only the two extreme options - there are many versions of modern balcony railings with different degrees of openness or closure. Which design to choose depends mainly on the location of the building, the location of the balcony and the residents' desire for privacy. If the building stands alone or far from pedestrian and traffic routes, it makes sense to install a fence that is as open as possible and does not obscure the view. On the other hand, a closed fence may be desirable if we want to protect ourselves from prying eyes from the road, street, walkway... Or simply from the prying eyes of neighbors.

What material should it be made of?

If we talk about modern, well-designed fences that perform not only a security function, but also have a visible aesthetic role, architects and users most often choose stainless steel with a natural appearance, galvanized and/or painted iron, aluminum and various combinations of steel supporting elements with glass fence surfaces. Each of the listed materials has its advantages. Stainless steel, aluminum and galvanized iron fences are the most resistant to corrosion. Here, aluminum fences have an additional advantage - low weight, which is why they are a particularly popular choice for adaptations or replacement of fences on existing buildings.

How long does it take to make a balcony railing?

For fences of normal dimensions, consisting of standard elements in stock, it is characteristic that they are manufactured and installed in a relatively short time. It takes a bit longer to make a uniquely designed fence according to the idea of an architect or user, but the sight of a building adorned with a unique modern balcony fence makes up for the extra month or two of waiting.

The right fence enhances the look of your home

In many historical periods, the shape of the fence expressed the social position and aesthetic sense of the owner of the building. Artfully designed stone fences with carved details, forged masterpieces and carved wooden fences – each in its own time and space – represented an important socio-architectural element. Today, fences and architecture in general are dominated by a minimalist style , but despite this, fences are still the element in architecture that has the power to upgrade the look of your home.
